Drawing on 16 years of experience, Richard puts his knowledge and expertise to work with Fitnessize. As a personal trainer, Richard is striving to help everyone keep fit with his bootcamps and classes. The following is the interview we did with Richard:
What do you wish other people knew about Fitnessize?
The variety in our sessions, the great technique especially in our boxing classes and great comradery between participants, the races we book together for 10km races while using them as a focal point for our training. I'd also like them to know that the sessions are fun, exhilarating and rewarding.
What inspired you to start teaching?
I was inspired initially by a fantastic PE teacher I had while I was about 10years old, who was always more concerned with effort than just talent. Lucky that I was a trier then! Then running a football club and coaching the team gave me a chance to try it out for myself.
What has surprised you most about teaching?
I was surprised by how many small skills combine to become a great teacher. I am always learning how to teach better, which I like.
As a teacher, what do you feel you have bragging rights to?
I offer great interpersonal skills, I like to get to know each person as an individual. I get the most out of each of them based on there personality and learning style. I'm very reliable, friendly but disciplined and love to share a joke. Put these together with my desire for creativity and variety and I think I can make a class which is a great place to be and train in.
What's your personal philosophy on exercise?
Exercise has to be enjoyable and rewarding firstly, it needs to be a long-term focused not just for the immediate and you have to balance pushing participants hard with being sympathetic to individual difficulties.
Owen is the self-confessed least active member of the GoSweat team. However, his enthusiasm to try new things has helped him discover a number of physical activities that he really enjoys. It won't be long before Owen is trying out for the Olympics - ok, that might be a bit of a stretch but one can dream!
