Having not known exactly what to expect, this first introduction to Electric Muscle Stimulation (EMS) was perhaps the most memorable experience of GoSweat365.
To give a sense of what EMS involves, imagine wearing a cold and moist set of cotton pyjamas (supplied for you) and then having a wetsuit sensation and have wetsuit indoors, you’re ready to get down to business.
The instructor hooks you up to something that resembles a 2002 Tom Cruise Sci-Fi/Minority report style device. I am then handed some 3kg Dumbells and the system is turned on. Unlike one of those annoying joke electric shock lighters, the pulses slowly ramp up until you say stop. These pulses cover the key muscles – Quads, Hamstrings Glutes, Lower Back, Lats, Triceps, Pecs and perhaps most intensely, Abs.
The next 20 minutes are based on a series of Circuits; 40-seconds doing the exercise, with the electric pulses running through your body, following by a 10-second shock-free break. These down times give you time to question your sanity and wipe away your sweat.
For the last 5 minutes, the glowing orb device is set to ‘massage mode’. Now, I enjoy a good sports massage (despite the intense pain it causes) but this was a whole different level. Much like serving fruit is a dessert, giving this ‘massage’ is cruelly deceiving. This ‘Massage mode’ had my arms twitching up and down and abs cramping.
Would I do it again, absolutely, and I have. Especially when sessions can cost as little as £22.50 for 1-2.
You definitely get your money’s worth, when it comes to the DOMS… #painfull
